For those of you who missed out, Waterloo dominated the tournament.  We comprised more than half of the tournament, and proved the validity of statistics by winning more than half of the podium spots.

This week, we will just be having meetings.

Everyone should come out, and give awesome debate speeches.  I am confident that we can repeat our performance at Novice, and dominate the finals again.  We just need you guys to come out and practice.

This email will get to nobody before the meeting, but I will send it regardless.

Meetings remain at 5:15 in RCH 306, on both Tuesday and Wednesday.  They are lengthy, don't be afraid to be late.

The exciting news of the week is that the German Quickie has been scheduled.

On July 9th,
At York University,
for $5,
There will be 3 rounds of style debate, in a crazy format, followed by a big party.

If there are enough people who want to, we can ...maybe... use our feds discount to get a rental van and split the cost across whoever is going.

Reg will be $5 if you get yourself there, Greyhound, carpooling, or hitchhiking.  A bit more if you want in on a rental van, precise costs coming soon.

The tournament is always awesome and relaxed, the only problem is that Waterloo has never won.

This needs to change!

Also, I don't understand mailing lists.  Is anybody getting this via posterous?  Because I don't think that worked.

In other news, our Equity Officer for the term will be the always levelheaded, Michelle Wu.  If anything about the club atmosphere makes you uncomfortable, and you don't want to talk to the Exec about it, you should go to her.  She is really nice.

Exec Meeting

Today ( Tuesday, yes, I know this email is late ), after our meeting, we will have an exec meeting of sorts.  We will be planning out a bunch of things for the rest of the term, and everybody with opinions should show up.  Being on the executive really only means that we are *obligated* to be there, not that our opinions matter more than anybody else.  We will be going over DDT, seeing how to do it better next year.  Talking about events to run this term, talking about our training plans, as well as anything else that comes up.

DDT and Clubs Day, as well as our usual meetings at 5:15 on Tuesday and Wednesday in RCH 306

DDT

For those of you who are interested in coming to DDT, here is what you need to know.

It will be this Friday to Sunday, May 13th - 15th

On Friday - at 3 PM - We will start reg in the environment courtyard in EV1
at 6 PM we will go to RCH 305 and 307 for public speaking
we should be done by 8 PM or so, and will head to the Huether for dinner.

Saturday and Sunday we will be in RCH 301.
Midnight we will be at the Bonfire beside Laurel creek

If you can’t commit, or stay for long, we would still love to see you.  You can sit in on a round or two if that is all you want to do.  Otherwise we would appreciate any help you can give Judging and running around.

If you are coming on Saturday, and have an Extension Cord, Toaster, Marshmellow Stick, or Video Camera that we can borrow, that would be awesome.  You should totally bring them.

Clubs Day

On Thursday and Friday, from 8 am to 3 pm, Clubs Day will be on in the SLC.  Debate will have a booth, which you should show up at, and help us pitch debate to passers-by.

If you are available, and have not gotten in contact with us, send an email to debateuw@gmail.com so I can tell you when we are in desperate need of your help.

If you have already gotten your name on a list, I will send you an email tomorrow morning, with specifics on what will be going down.

I am going to send this email early, because there are a bunch of things that need to get sorted out soon.

DDT

I am sure that I have mentioned this about eighty times already, but DDT is May 13th-15th.  Everything you could possibly want to know is here http://cusid.ca/community/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=21625

We need help from anybody who can billet debaters.  If you have a floor, a couch, or a bed that your roomate on co-op is not using, we need places for incoming debaters to sleep Friday night, and potentially Sunday afternoon.  I can promise you that they will be lovely people, and will be eternally grateful to you for helping them get the sleep they need to survive the gruelling challenges of Saturday.

In addition, we would like to hear from people about their ability to Judge.  This year we have far more registered teams than in the past, and so we need lots of judges to come out and help us decide how good they are.

Anybody who can help with billeting, judging, or even just hanging around helping out, should send an email to debateuw@gmail.com detailing your situation.  Any and all help would be awesome, and rewarded with free breakfast on Sunday, in addition to my eternal gratitude.

If you aren't sure, and want to drop by, we will be in RCH 305 and 307 from 5-when public speaking is done on Friday, and we will be in all of RCH for all of Saturday/Sunday.

Meeting Times

At the moment our meeting times are 5:00 on Tuesday & Wednesday.  This was decided arbitrarily so that we would have somewhere to go at the beginning of the term.  Now that the term is started, we need feedback from people on when they can attend meetings, so that we can choose the best possible times.  We are currently thinking 5 on Tuesday and 7 on Wednesday, but we are flexible.

In order to make sure that times are set by the plurality, rather than the loudest people, everyone should go to http://whenisgood.net/qx3td4a and indicate when they would be able to attend meetings.  Once everyone has done that, we will change the times and book the rooms for the rest of the term.

Clubs Day

Clubs Days this term are May 12th & 13th, from 8:00 am to 3 pm.  We need help manning the booth, and telling people how awesome debate is.  If you have free time, even if it is only an hour, we would love your help.  People who are available should show up at a meeting and tell us, or email debateuw@gmail.com to tell us that you can help.  That would be awesome of you, because then we don't have to panic about whether or not we can keep it manned all day.

Equity

Since our constitutional amendment 2 terms ago, we need an equity officer for this term.  The details are laid out here http://cusid.ca/community/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=20668 ( If you can't get there, create a CusidNet account and send us an email with your username ).  We will be announcing this for the next 2 weeks, but anybody who is interested should apply soon.  Applications can either be posted on CusidNet, or emailed to debateuw@gmail.com.

Housekeeping

Lastly, I would just like to go on the record saying that Google Groups is awful.  Because we have had so many problems with it in the past while, I am going to migrate this mailing list over to our Posterous account.

What this means is that everyone on this list is going to get an email from Posterous about being added to that new list.  Assuming that it works properly, this will be the last email send through the debateuw google group.  If you unsubscribe from this list very very soon, you will probably not be included in the bulk move.

It also means that replies to emails in the future will show up as comments on the Posterous post (uwdebate.posterous.com), and that there will be some images in the messages you get.  Hopefully everything else will continue to run smoothly.  Unfortunately, we are dealing with computers, so that may be expecting too much.

TL;DR

Send an email to debateuw@gmail.com if you can billet people for DDT, help with DDT, help man the Clubs day booth, have opinions on meeting times, want to apply to be equity officer, or if you just want someone to talk to.

Since the term is starting tomorrow, debate will be kicking it into high gear right off the bat.

Meetings & Executive

At the moment meetings are set for
Tuesdays & Wednesdays,  5:30,  RCH 306

At the first and/or second meeting, we will figure out whether we want to change one or both of these.

At that same meeting, we will be having elections for our Executive for this term.
Nobody has posted their candidacy yet, but such things may show up on CusidNet.

Since it is summer term, the only positions we will be electing will be President and Finance.  Anybody who has attended 3 meetings is eligible to show up and vote.

DDT

We will also be preparing for DDT, which we are hosting on May 13th-15th.  It is going to be Awesome.  All specifics are posted at http://cusid.ca/community/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=21625

We need any and all Waterloo students to show up and Judge.

We will be reviewing Style Round judging in the meetings leading up to the tournament.

I want to thank everyone for a great National Tournament! UW did great - and most of all had alot of fun! Great job guys! 

In other news, we will be meeting this week, Wednesday at 5, in RCH 208, and Thursday in PAS 1229 at 5:30. Our last meeting of the term (sadface!) will be Thursday the 31st. So be sure to make it out these next couple of weeks. We will be going over some of the stuff we learned at Nationals. Also on the 30th, we will be voting on our equity office position, as per the constitutional motion we passed in the fall. So be sure to make it out then to get your voice heard! Proxies can be sent to uwdebate@gmail.com and must state who will be holding the vote and if it is directed or not. 

Also, speaking of elections, in May we will be electing our summer exc. So if you are doing to be around in the summer start thinking of if you'd like to run for a position and how you can give back to the club. If you have any questions about the exc feel free to email me or the club.

It is another exciting week here at UW Debate. We've got two meetings for ya - one in RCH 208 Wednesday at 5 and another at 5:30 in PAS 1229 Thursday. We sure to make it out! We will be starting to build our cases for Nationals so if you are interested in going to that tournament. Be sure to make it. The tournament is March 18-20th and is $50 to go. The first 13 people to give in their money gets to go - so be sure to get your money in fast!

In other news, we will be having a fundraiser social March 12th - entrance is $10 so be sure to make it out! All profits will be going to the club. More information will be provided at meetings. 

Also a huge congrats to everyone who made it to West Point's Black Knight Invitational! The teams did great - in particular congrats to Tamara Brown who broke as a judge! Great job!

Lastly, there will be an exc meeting today at 4:30. We will be meeting in front of imprint in SLC.
